Food and wineThe Loire valley is the garden of France, and we take advantage of all the beautifully fresh vegetables, salads and fruit in preparing our dinners. Our area, south of the Loire, is a huge wine producer, and we serve the red and white Saumur wines, as well as the Crémant (sparkling) wine as an aperitif. Mushrooms are second only to wine in local production, so these feature too. Poultry comes from the Vendée, to the south west, and meat from Parthenay and Bressuire to the south. Seafood regularly arrives from the Atlantic coast. There are local goats’ cheeses; other cheeses come from further afield. Seasonal availability directs our choice of menus, so you will enjoy asparagus and strawberries, artichokes and the most delicious melons you have ever tasted – but only when they are in season. You can pre-book dinner on Saturday evenings to welcome you at the end of your journey here. For 30 euros, we serve an aperitif, starter, main course and dessert accompanied by Saumur red and white wines. The same formula is available each evening except Mondays and Thursdays. We are always happy to serve a more elaborate meal for a special occasion. On cooler evenings, dinner is served in the dining room, but weather permitting we serve it on our south-facing terrace. Sometimes the aperitif is served in the wine cellars. If you want to dine here, all you have to do is to let us know by the previous evening, except Saturdays (see above). Restaurants There are several restaurants within walking distance in Montreuil-Bellay, ranging from traditional French cuisine to meals served in a historic setting, and from pancakes to Italian food. There are other restaurants within driving distance. We’ll be happy to discuss your preferences and make reservations for you. |
