What the firemen saw!
Montreuil-Bellay is served by a terrific band of volunteer firemen, who are also paramedics. They even give up their Sunday mornings to practise.
Because of our high surrounding walls, the whole property is completely invisible from outside, in spite of the neighbouring buildings you can see in the pictures. We wanted ‘aerial’ shots of la Maison Aubelle; the firemen wanted to practise with their extra-long extending platform. So in return for taking our camera up aloft with them, we allowed them to manoeuvre their platform from the Place du Concorde over our wall by the swimming pool, raise, lower and swivel the cradle, and, incidentally, take photographs. They wouldn’t normally be allowed to ‘invade’ private property in this way, so they were grateful for the opportunity and we were grateful for the photographs.
Here are some of their pictures, as well as one of the team that was practising that rather dreary November morning. Good thing they have a head for heights! Thanks, guys.
