La Maison Aubelle

Welcome. Come in. Have a glass of wine
Humour if you're feeling sociable, seclusion if you're not. Delicious dinners if you want, restaurants if you prefer, well-fitted kitchens to make the most of the local markets. Secure off street parking. All you need within walking distance.

La Maison Aubelle is an excellent base from which to experience all that the western Loire has to offer. Whether you come for three nights as a short break, to sample the region, or to extend, and perhaps compare, a holiday in another part of France, or take a week – or longer – for a more in-depth exploration of the area’s châteaux, history, vineyards and natural beauty, Sally and Peter are on-hand to advise and inform you, based on eighteen years of enjoying living here. Our intention is that you will be in total comfort, as independent as you like while benefiting from local knowledge when you want it – or we’ll leave you alone, if you prefer!

La Maison Aubelle, a nobleman's house dating from the 16th century, stands in the heart of Montreuil-Bellay, a historic town set in the Loire valley 10 miles south of Saumur. The town is of special interest. As well as its ancient château, it has preserved almost all of its medieval walls, making it the last remaining fortified town in Anjou.

The house itself, built from the local tufa limestone, has been restored using the finest local craftsmen and materials by its English owners, Peter and Sally Smith, and offers guests five outstanding apartments, a secluded walled garden and a heated swimming pool, all in secure surroundings.

Montreuil-Bellay makes a perfect base for exploring the western part of the Loire valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its rich history and unspoilt way of life. Situated at the convergence of the three provinces of Poitou, Touraine and Anjou, it offers visitors the beauty of its countryside and its gentle quality of life.

Sites of historic interest, famous vineyards, fine fishing rivers and a landscape that will appeal to artists, all contribute to the special appeal of the region.

For the more energetic, there is excellent horse riding nearby, a microlight base just outside town, canoeing on the river and tennis on the town’s courts, as well as signposted walks of varying degrees of distance and difficulty. Cyclists will enjoy the dedicated 140 km Thouet à Vélo bicycle route following the River Thouet which passes through Montreuil-Bellay to join the 800 km Loire à Vélo bicycle route at Saumur. No need to do it all at once!

Peter and Sally, as well as providing excellent accommodation, food and wine, will be happy to make any possible advance arrangements for their guests.
